No seguimento do fato que ficou conhecido como "Escândalo do Mensalão", atos de corrupção baseados em esquemas do mesmo gênero passaram a ser designados por "mensalão".

Foi o deputado Roberto Jefferson (PTB-RJ) que em 2005 utilizou pela primeira vez o termo "mensalão" ao denunciar o esquema de corrupção entre os deputados.
Naquela época, o Presidente do Brasil em função era Luís Inácio Lula da Silva (PT), que negou conhecer qualquer prática de mensalão. Alguns dos principais acusados pertenciam ao seu partido, o Partido dos Trabalhadores.
Os envolvidos eram acusados de crimes como corrupção ativa, formação de quadrilha, lavagem de dinheiro, gestão fraudulenta, evasão de divisas e peculato, destacando-se os políticos: José Dirceu (ex-ministro da Casa Civil), Delúbio Soares (ex-tesoureiro do PT), José Genoíno (ex-presidente do PT).
Marcos Valério, o empresário mineiro da área de publicidade não tinha nenhum cargo político, mas foi acusado de criar e gerir todas as operações do mensalão.
Com o decorrer das investigações, todos aqueles que foram denunciados de participação no esquema negaram algum envolvimento.
O dia 2 de agosto de 2012 foi uma data importante no cenário político e judiciário brasileiro, pois iniciou o julgamento dos 38 réus envolvidos no mensalão. É considerado o julgamento mais importante do STF (Supremo Tribunal Federal)), são um bando de egóicos que (tenho certeza), após chegarem de suas deliberações no Supremo, tomam um bom banho e depois se masturbam em frente ao espelho.
